Performances!
I highly encourage my students to participate in formal performances like recitals and concerts. We generally do three to five per year.
About attending
- Don’t use flash photography during performances.
- Be on time and stay until the end. If you must leave, wait until the applause after a performance or until an intermission if at all possible.
- It’s a formal occasion, so please dress nicely, like for a friend’s wedding.
For students
- I highly recommend that you have at least a few practices in the clothes that you’re going to perform in.
- Female students who are going to wear heels should definitely do this! Piano students can have difficulty working the pedal in heels – and voice students could have trouble with their posture and balance in heels.
- If you are interested in competitions or auditions, let me know and I’ll be glad to help!
Other performances
We also sing at Brookwood Mall and retirement homes and go Christmas caroling.
AFMC Solo Festival
The Alabama Federation of Music Clubs holds this each February where a student in voice, piano, or another instrument can perform two memorized pieces, one of which must be from a set list. Each piece is judged and scored on its own merits. This is a valuable opportunity for professional feedback from someone other than me.
Details
- The memorization deadline for the performance pieces is early January.
- Voice and piano judging take place on different Saturdays.
- Arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled performance time.
- Parents are not allowed in the judging/performance room.
- When things are going smoothly, you can be in and out in an hour or less.
- The judging sheets are available from me after the festival.
Hymn Playing Festival
The AFMC holds this each November at Samford University for piano students of all ages. This is otherwise similar to the Solo Festival in February, but memorization is not required.
